90-Word Review: The Trial: Pyaar Kaanoon Dhokha on Disney+ Hotstar is the Indian take on The Good Wife. Despite Kajol’s presence, the series struggles. Season 1 is weak, and Season 2, though slightly better with its case-per-episode format, still falters midway. The writing feels scattered, with multiple tracks that don’t connect well. Even dependable actors like Sheeba Chaddha are wasted in poorly sketched roles. Overall, the show lacks depth and spark. Unless you’re a die-hard Kajol fan, there isn’t much here to invest in.
Review: The Trial: Pyaar Kaanoon Dhokha attempts to bring the acclaimed format of The Good Wife to Indian screens, but it never truly finds its footing. The story of a homemaker (played by Kajol) stepping into the world of law after her husband’s imprisonment should have been powerful and layered, but the execution leaves much to be desired.
Season 1 is particularly underwhelming, with flat courtroom drama and characters that don’t resonate. Kajol tries to bring strength to her role, but the writing doesn’t back her up. Even Sheeba Chaddha, usually reliable, is stuck in a one-note “tough boss” stereotype.
Season 2 shows some improvement with its one-case-per-episode approach, but the narrative soon gets tangled in too many parallel tracks, none of which are seamlessly woven together. The emotional stakes and courtroom intensity — the heart of a legal drama — remain half-baked.
In the end, The Trial feels like a wasted opportunity. Only Kajol’s fans may find a reason to sit through its 14 episodes, but for most viewers, it doesn’t offer enough drama, depth, or freshness.
