SAMBAHADUR
Sam Bahadur — Vicky Kaushal Becomes Sam Manekshaw
Intro: Sam Bahadur is a 2023 Hindi biographical war drama directed by Meghna Gulzar. The film follows the life and military career of Sam Manekshaw, India's first Field Marshal, with Vicky Kaushal playing the lead role. Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra, Neeraj Kabi and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub are also part of the cast.
Review (90 Words): What a transformation for Vicky Kaushal from Raazi! And perhaps that is also a great observation about Meghna Gulzar's work. In Raazi, he plays someone on the other side of Sehmat's mission; here, he becomes Sam Manekshaw, a completely different personality. I liked how Vicky changes his body language, voice and mannerisms for the role. The film also gives you a sense of the man behind the military uniform. After watching Talvar, Raazi and now Sam Bahadur, I can see Meghna's different approaches to real stories. For me, this just edges Raazi.
Full Review: After watching Talvar and Raazi, Sam Bahadur became the next obvious film for me. All three are Meghna Gulzar films based around real people and real events, but the stories couldn't be more different.
Talvar takes you into an investigation. Raazi puts you inside the world of a spy. Sam Bahadur follows the life and career of a military leader.
And what immediately caught my attention was Vicky Kaushal.
I had just watched him in Raazi, where his character is part of Sehmat's world. Now, in Sam Bahadur, he becomes Sam Manekshaw. What a transformation.
The change is not only in the uniform or appearance. His walk, voice, expressions and the way he speaks all feel carefully worked out. And perhaps that is one of the interesting things about Meghna Gulzar's films — the amount of preparation and detailing that goes into recreating a particular world.
The military setting is also handled with a lot of attention. The period details, uniforms, locations and overall look help you enter the time in which the story takes place.
But I felt the film works better as a look at Sam Manekshaw's life than as a tightly constructed drama. There are several interesting events and moments, but at times it feels like the film is moving from one important chapter to another rather than building one continuous dramatic journey.
That is perhaps the biggest difference I felt when I compared it with Talvar and Raazi. Talvar remains the sharpest for me because of the way its story is constructed. Raazi and Sam Bahadur are closer in the sense that both deal with the nation, duty and people working within larger national events.
If I had to place all three based purely on my viewing experience, Talvar stays on top, while Raazi and Sam Bahadur are very close — with Sam Bahadur just edging ahead for me.
And that makes this Meghna Gulzar journey interesting. Three films, three very different worlds, but the same interest in real people and real stories.
For me, Sam Bahadur is worth watching — especially for Vicky Kaushal's transformation and the detailing that brings Sam Manekshaw's world to life.
