Gargi Review – A Disturbing Story That Makes You Think

There is a constant feeling of anxiety and discomfort while watching it. I think almost everything works here — the direction, acting, writing and even the background score, which adds to the tension. The way the different stories connect is also handled well. It is a disturbing film and the way it concludes takes the story somewhere unexpected. Even the title feels apt — Gargi means a wise woman who makes others think.

And then there are films that make you uncomfortable while you are watching them.

Gargi belongs to the third category.

With a running time of 2 hours and 10 minutes, I expected the film to feel long at some point. Surprisingly, it kept me engaged through most of it. But this isn't the kind of engagement where you sit back and enjoy the ride.

There is anxiety.

There is discomfort.

And there is a constant feeling that things can become worse.

Sai Pallavi plays Gargi, and I think she is excellent in the role. But what worked for me is that the film doesn't depend only on her performance. The direction, writing, supporting actors and background score all contribute to the experience.

The background music, in particular, quietly adds to the tension. It makes certain scenes feel heavier without constantly telling you what to feel.

I also liked the way the different stories within the film are connected. Initially, some of these threads may feel like separate pieces, but slowly you understand why they are there. The connections add another layer to the story.

What makes Gargi disturbing is the subject itself.

It deals with crime, justice and the legal system, but doesn't make things unnecessarily black and white. That makes the situation more difficult to process. You are not simply watching a good person fight a bad person. You are watching people deal with circumstances where every answer creates another question.

And then comes the ending.

I wouldn't want to say much about it because it is better experienced without knowing where the film is heading. But the conclusion takes the story into a different space and made me look back at what I had just watched.

There is also something interesting about the title.

Gargi means a wise or intellectual woman — someone who makes people think.

And I thought that was a very apt choice. Because this film doesn't simply give you a story about crime and justice and ask you to move on.

It leaves you with questions.

For me, Gargi is a must-watch Tamil legal drama if you are comfortable watching something serious and disturbing.

It may not always be an easy watch.

But it is definitely a film worth thinking about.
